The publication analyzes several aspects of Roma political representation and participation pointing out blank areas in the understanding of “Roma politics” and “Roma political life”. It focuses on a host of issues such as voting preferences of the Roma, their participation in the 1998 and 2002 elections, perceptions of the Roma political scene, opinions of the Roma on the integration goals of the Slovak Republic, Roma value orientations, as well as relations with the majority population. The publication is divided into five chapters. In the chapter titled “Roma and Political Participation – Eligo Ergo Sum” analyst Michal Vašečka discusses the participation of the Roma in the 1998 and 2002 elections. He focuses on the respondent’s selection of political parties, and the reasons for these choices. In the chapter “Roma voters and their value orientations” Peter Puliš describes the basic pillars of political participation of the Roma in the period of transformation and analyzes the consistency of Roma positions. “Roma Political Representation”, written by Jana Rybová analyzes the development of the Roma political scene in Slovakia, the strategies of differing Roma political parties, and the Roma’s perception of their own political representation. In the chapter “Migration of Roma to the Countries of the European Union” Martina Jurásková discusses the positions of the Roma toward Slovakia and the European Union, and analyzes the migration potential of the Roma in Slovakia. In the final chapter, “Roma versus the Majority Population – Positions, Relations, Conflicts” Elena Kriglerová analyzes the formation of mutual relations between the Roma and the majority population. This chapter also examines inter-ethnic conflicts and expected relationship developments in the future. The publication draws on previous studies, as well as new sociological research, conducted by the research team of the Program of Ethnic Minorities.
