Annotation
The publication presents the expert community as well as the general public with an analytical view of various social circumstances of the voting act of Slovak citizens in 2002 parliamentary elections. Divided into five thematic sections, it is a collection of separate analytical studies whose authors compare election results in Slovakia to those in other Visegrad Four countries and analyze the emergence and performance of so-called alternative parties whose election success they attribute to the phenomenon of ‘central populism’. In the section devoted to electoral behaviour, they examine election results and their cultural, historical, regional, urban-rural, socio-demographic and ethnic context and discuss factors affecting electoral behaviour of Slovak citizens. The book specifically analyzes election attitudes of the youngest categories of voters, i.e. first-time and second-time voters. It also evaluates election campaigning by selected political parties, activities of non-governmental organizations before elections and the role of the media in elections. The publication features two illustrated supplements featuring pictures from the election campaign.
