Annotation
The final output of the project called Promoting the Policy of Reforms in Slovakia jointly implemented by the IVO and the IRI, the publication examines Slovakia’s transition from a totalitarian regime toward democracy, launching of economic and social reforms during the first decade of its independent existence and perception of these processes by Slovak citizens. Simultaneously, it evaluates developments after the 2002 elections in the context of independent Slovakia’s overall development. The authors render an erudite reflection on Slovakia’s specific transition toward consolidated democracy, examining the principal trends of constitutional development, discussing the role of political parties as promoters of reform policies and comparing democratic consolidation processes in Slovakia and in the Czech Republic. They pay special attention to the character of systemic and sectional socio-economic reforms, the process of eliminating etatist practices from society, the process of economic liberalization and the role of organized interests in the process of implementing reforms.
